In accordance with the mission statement, a Volunteer Advocate’s purpose is to be on an “on-call rotation to provide comprehensive crisis services”.  Advocates are required to be available from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 a.m. on weekdays and 24-hours on weekends.  Advocates may also assist with prevention and education, community awareness and outreach services based on availability.

Organization
The Volunteer Advocates are primarily accountable to the Coordinator of Adult and Child Direct Services and the Executive Director. Advocates may work with other staff as needed.

 

Principal Accountabilities
Provide 24-hour comprehensive crisis intervention to victims of sexual violence as well as support to their friends, family and partners.

  • Be available to be on the “on-call” rotating pager system for 1 week every four to six weeks (depending on the number of volunteers)
  • Accompany child and adult victims to hospital, police interviews and court
  • Provide non-judgmental, supportive listening and empowerment based advocacy for victims, their friends, family and partners
  • Be available to assist with prevention and education, community awareness and outreach services as time allows
  • Attend bi-monthly (1st & 3rd Tuesdays) advocate meetings

Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge Needed

  • Commitment to providing non-judgmental, supportive listening and empowerment based advocacy for victims
  • Willingness to participate in 40 hours of training and skill enhancement
  • Over age 18
  • Own or have access to a car and phone with voicemail
  • Commitment of  at least one year upon training completion
